Gardening Resources for Those New to Helena Area

2022-05 Gardening in the Helena Area (pdf)Download

Tips for Spring Planting

  • The average last day of frost in our area is May 15.
  • Plants don't like "cold feet" so wait to put in seeds or seedlings until soil temperature is above 60 degrees to give your plants a good start.
  • Natural fertilizer: compost adds organic matter and nutrients to the soil.
  • Little or no tilling is recommended to minimize the disturbance of microorganisms in the soil.
  • Water in the morning and avoid overhead watering.
  • Start with healthy plants!
