This is the heart of Gather in the Garden. The Gather in the Garden series is geared to gardeners who enjoy a close up look at others' gardens and chatting about gardening techniques, projects, landscaping, composting -- in other words, everything gardening.
These gatherings provide a chance to visit with local gardeners and learn the triumphs, hard work and challenges behind their garden's story.
Gather in the Garden hosts will open the very heart and soul of their efforts for a two-hour visit on the day and time of their choice. Days and times will vary (evenings, weekends). We are hoping for a nice variety -- something for everyone. Group size will be limited and will be open to GCMMGA members only. Registration will be necessary to keep group size limited.
The Gather in the Garden series is primarily an Association member-only event, however some Gathers may be open to nonmembers.

An ode to Loren's Swedish heritage, the Gustafsons' home and garden are lovingly referred to Sweden House and Sundborn Garden.
Loren relaxes, surrounded by some of their 500+ spring bulbs.
Over 500 spring bulbs will be in bloom during the Gustafsons' Tulip Tour.
Loren and Cynthia Gustafson cordially welcome all guests to come and stroll or pause and ponder the Gustafson Family efforts to build and tend an urban farm garden in the heart of Helena.
We are hopeful to capture a majority of over 500 springs bulbs in glorious bloom. 2022 brought a welcome burst of color for the winter-weary gardeners who toured this yard, however 2021 they were still buried in snow during the peak bloom.
The Gustafson Tulip Tour is not an official Gather in the Garden event. No registration is needed, everyone is welcome to visit the Gustafsons' Sweden House and Sundborn Garden, which fit snugly into two city lots located in south central Helena. Mark your calendars, invite your friends and enjoy the first blooms of the 2023 gardening season, connect with fellow gardeners and tour this historic Helena home on Sunday afternoon, May 21st from 2 to 4pm.
This Gather in the Garden is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, July 12th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Please email your request to attend. You will receive the address prior to the event.
Any Early Birds attending the Plantenberg/Mistek Tour are invited to make a stop on Highway 287 for a morning walk through Dawn Reynolds' Garden in the Cottonwoods just outside of Winston.
Dawn has a modest garden which includes a variety of unique plants grown from seed. Stop in for a look!
All are welcome to the pre-tour Gathering, about 20 minutes from the Plantenberg/Mistek Townsend Garden. Refreshments will be offered.
This Townsend yard is designed with minimal maintenance in mind - no weed eating, lots of woody plants and many native species. Patrick and Mary use gravel and wood mulches. Trees grow twice as fast without grass competition. Patrick is the Chairman of the Townsend Tree Board, which lends to the knowledge he shares about the many trees on his property. When standing under a tree's presence, learning about that tree becomes meaningful; the importance of trees incorporated in landscapes becomes apparent.
Patrick is also the President of the Montana Native Plant Society. Mary and Patrick are tireless volunteers supporting the community. You may see them anywhere around town with a mower, pruning, or operating a backhoe, participating in many activities that make Townsend a better place to live. Patrick and Mary will also line up several things for attendees to observe and participate in.
This Gather in the Garden is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, August 5th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Registration is required. Please email your request to attend. You will receive the address prior ot the event.

Welcome to the Krauses' garden at the base of the Scratchgravels. Planting windrows with over 300 bushes and trees was a top priority when they began landscaping our place 10 years ago. An orchard was born, as apple and fruit trees were added next as a long-anticipated dream! Asparagus, raspberries, horseradish, raised veggie beds and Earth Boxes were habits that came along from Alaska. The Earth Boxes are thriving in their Montana location. Then last summer, Jean dove into a new garden focused entirely on native xeriscaping, with promising results. In September there should be apples to sample from the Krauses' Orchard.
This Gather in the Garden is scheduled for Monday evening, September 18th from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Registration is required. Please email your request to attend. You will receive the address prior ot the event.
Kelly Hanna is a Clancy local, the latest of five generations gardening this land. The earliest of those gardeners were among the last of the subsistence gardeners in the area. Kelly continues the proud tradition with the belief raising your own food greatly increases your quality of life. Kelly's priority is relearning old gardening skills and acquiring new ones.
We met Kelly last year in April when he shared some of his season extension tips. This year we will join him in another of his passions - seed saving. As Kelly says, "The most fun would be to collect seed still in the garden and process it." Late September is the earliest that works to collect and process onion and leek seeds for example. Kelly has a passion for finding and growing unique, heirloom plants so he can save their seed and he has some unique varieties. If you visit his garden in the growing season, you will see many plants gone to seed, the goal for a dedicated seed saver. Bring your questions about seed collecting and saving, growing garlic from seed, and enjoy the autumn weather with fellow gardeners.
This Gather in the Garden is scheduled for Thursday evening, September 28th starting at 5:30 pm. Registration is required. Please email your request to attend. You will receive the address prior ot the event.
