Breakout Session 1 (9:00 to 10:30 am) - Choose 1

1A - Container Garden Like A Pro

1C - Rooted in Community: The Story & Impact of Master Gardeners & the Rocky Mountain Gardens

1B - Firewise Alternatives to Turf Lawns

Presented by Bob Hitzeroth, Owner of High Country Growers, Helena

As more and more people move away from planting flowers in traditional in-ground garden beds, mixed containers have become an increasingly popular option to bring color to your home, yard, and patio. That beautiful hanging basket or pot you bring home from the garden center is the result of prepping and planting done nearly a year in advance of your purchase.

Bob and his daughter Cheryl Erdahl will discuss how to plan and grow mixed containers from start to finish, from soil mix and slow release fertilizer to the cuttings and combinations that are used. They’ll cover the thought process for planning mixes, the difference in vegetative cuttings and seed (not all petunias are the same!) and tips for successfully planting your own mixed containers. Bob and Cheryl will provide an overview of the planning and growing process at High Country Growers, resulting in a product that looks good and lasts in our Montana climate.

1B - Firewise Alternatives to Turf Lawns

1C - Rooted in Community: The Story & Impact of Master Gardeners & the Rocky Mountain Gardens

1B - Firewise Alternatives to Turf Lawns

Presented by Lois Olsen, volunteer manager of the Public Firewise Demonstration Garden at Montana City Volunteer Fire Station

Learn about the development of a public firewise garden as an alternative to a turf lawn! Construction of the Public Firewise Demonstration Garden began in 2021 and was “completed” in 2025. It has over 120 different species including 9 tree species, 19 shrubs, over 85 species of flowering plants and 3 grasses. Lois will review the concept of firewise landscaping and what makes a plant more resistant to fire and will show how to construct a crevice garden and what makes these gardens different than a standard rock garden. She will show how to use firewise plants that are hardy in our area, drought resistant and which plants are deer resistant.

1C - Rooted in Community: The Story & Impact of Master Gardeners & the Rocky Mountain Gardens

1C - Rooted in Community: The Story & Impact of Master Gardeners & the Rocky Mountain Gardens

Presented by Sarah Holden, Horticulture Extension Educator, Missoula County

Rocky Mountain Gardens stand as a living testament to the power of community engagement, horticultural education, and volunteer stewardship. The first step in caring for plants in a landscape is knowing which plants you have. In this session, we will discuss some foundational plant identification concepts to help identify any plant.

We will then put this information to use in a hands-on activity where we will learn to identify several native shrubs and perennials used in home landscape settings in Montana. Participants will also discuss options for plant ID tools and resources in Montana.

3A - Do-It-Yourself Drip Irrigation: Reap the Benefits!

3C - The Nuts and Bolts of Beekeeping: How to Get Started & How to Keep Everything Going

3B - Taming the Tangle: Practical Weed Control for Flowerbeds & Landscape Areas

Presented by Rhonda Simmons, Montana Master Gardener and past president of Gold Country Montana Master Gardener Association

Water is a hot commodity, and using it efficiently is becoming increasing important. This session will focus on how to plan, install and maintain a drip irrigation system for your vegetable garden, flower beds, and shrubs using a network of tubing, valves and emitters directly hooked to your hose bib.

Drip irrigation conserves water, reduces weeds, and provides consistent watering that will result in more productive, healthy, thriving plants, all while saving you time and allowing more freedom and relief from watering duties throughout the driest of Montana summers. Imagine leaving for a week and coming back to a well hydrated garden!

We will discuss key components of the system, where to find them, how to use them, provide general planning considerations, demonstrate how to plan the initial setup, with the goal of empowering you to build your easy-to-use system, expand and maintain it for years of worry-free watering.

Weeds don’t take days off, especially in flowerbeds and landscaped areas. This session will dig into practical, research backed strategies for managing weeds in home landscapes.

In this interactive session we’ll walk through simple, sustainable approaches to weed control in perennial and annual beds, including mulching techniques, plant selection, and maintenance routines.

We’ll also touch on the growing interest in homemade pesticides, offering guidance on what’s safe, what’s not, and how to make informed choices for your garden and the environment.

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just getting started, you’ll gain practical tips you can put to use right away.

Bob Hitzeroth

Sofia Franzluebbers

Bob Hitzeroth

Bob Hitzeroth first started working in the greenhouse industry as a young boy under his grandfather, Sylvester. Sylvester had immigrated from Lithuania in 1914 when he was just 10. Ves began working in the greenhouse industry and eventually bought his own glass house in the Chicago suburb of Geneva, Illinois in 1963. Although he had little formal education, he had a green thumb and grew annual flowers and vegetables along with cut flowers that he would sell at the markets in downtown Chicago.

Working with his grandfather, Bob developed a passion for growing flowers and went on to study Horticulture at the University of Illinois. After college, Bob and Donna married and a year later in 1976 bought their first greenhouse business, We-Go Greenhouse, in West Chicago, Illinois. Twelve years and three children later, they bought Geneva Greenhouse from Bob’s grandfather. Bob successfully ran both wholesale/retail operations for many years.

In 1993, while traveling the West on vacation, Bob and Donna ran across an abandoned rose range in Helena, Montana. That fall the range was at auction and Bob made the winning bid. High Country Growers was established in the spring of 1994. In the following years, Bob and Donna moved their family west to run High Country Growers. Later, We-Go Greenhouse was sold, and Geneva Greenhouse was closed.

Bob brings years of growing expertise and exceptional quality to all aspects of High Country Growers. Through his hard work and dedication, and the hard work and dedication of our amazing team, we produce quality plants for the Montana gardener.

Cheryl Erdahl joins Bob for his presentation. Cheryl is Bob's daughter and grew up in the greenhouse business. She has always taken an interest in the retail side of things and has been running a cash register at the greenhouse since grade school. She currently manages the Helena Garden Center up at High Country Growers.

Rhonda Simmons

Rhonda Simmons

Abiya 'Abi' Saeed

Gaining inspiration from her grandmother’s prolific vegetable garden and plentiful root cellar, Rhonda Simmons started her journey as a Montana Master Gardener in 2014. Early in the journey she was introduced to drip irrigation and immediately recognized its benefits. Over the last 12 years she has landscaped a 5-acre portion of her family’s 24-acre arid high mountain desert property solely with drip irrigation (except the lawn, which is her husband’s domain). She strives to spend every waking hour she can tending to the properties’ 250+ individual evergreen, ornamental and fruiting trees and shrubs, a native plant hill, perennials and annuals, plus a 7500 square foot vegetable garden and small-scale cut flower farm, and appreciates the freedom and peace of mind knowing that all the plants are drip irrigated.

Rhonda is proud to have been one of the original MGs that formed the Gold Country Montana Master Gardener Association in 2015, having held multiple positions culminating in serving as President. She was the founding organizer of the Lewis and Clark County Celebration turned Symposium, and was honored to carry the torch for the first eight years. She appreciated being recognized as 2017 Lewis and Clark County Master Gardener of the Year and 2025 Montana Outstanding Master Gardener for her commitment to ongoing learning for herself and others. She is also an Extension Certified Master Food Preserver.
